  Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale )

Is a common specie of the Asteraceae family. This plant known as Katagan by Mısır and Kıpçak Turks and as saçratku by Çağatay Turks is named as karahindiba today. Although it has different names such as acıgıcı, acıgüneyik and arslandişi, the most common name is radika.

Karahindiba grows in April and May, in meadows and sides of roads, perennial, yellow flowered grass like plant. Although it is not wanted in meadows, hindiba actually is a herbal remedy.

The leaves are 5–25 cm long, simple and basal, entire or lobed, forming a rosette above the central taproot. As the leaves grow outward they push down the surrounding vegetation, such as grass in a lawn, which kills those plants by cutting off their access to sunlight. A bright yellow flower head, which is open in the daytime but closes at night, is borne singly on a hollow stem (scape) which rises 4–75 cm[4] above the leaves and exudes a milky sap (latex) when broken. A rosette may produce several flowering stems at a time. The flower head is 2–5 cm in diameter and consists entirely of ray florets. The flower head matures into a spherical "clock" (also known as a "wishie") containing many single-seeded fruits (achenes). Each achene is attached to a pappus of fine hairs, which enable wind-aided dispersal over long distance.

Dandelion with its % 5 high percentage is one of the best potassium sources. Also rich in Vitamin A, vitamin C, nicotinic acid, calcium and various minerals. That's why the leaves and root are used in salads In some countries in Europe and in India certain kinds of Hindiba are farmed. There are about 100 species seen in all Europe, North America, Asia and almost everywhere in the world. In Turkey 49 kinds are found. Karahindiba widespread in the Aegean and Marmara regions is also seen commonly in the other regions of Anatolia.
